FAQ's
Are Hex Plates Road Legal?
The legality of hex plates in the UK has been a topic of much discussion. Fortunately, hex plates are legal, provided they adhere to the requirements set by the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA)
According to the DVLA regulations, the shape of the number plate itself is not restricted, but the following criteria must be met:
- Reflective material: Plates must be made from a reflective material to enhance visibility
- Character colour and background: Front plates must have black characters on a white background, while rear plates must have black characters on a yellow background.
- No background patterns: The plate must not have a background pattern to ensure readibility.
- Markings: The plate must display the supplier’s name, postcode, and the British Standard number (‘BS AU 145e‘ for plates fitted after 1 September 2021)
As long as hex plates meet these requirements, they are considered road-legal. Purchasing these plates from reputable suppliers like Number Plates 4 U is essential to ensure they comply with all legal standards and avoid potential fines or penalties.
Are 3D & 4D plates road legal?
Yes, 3D & 4D number plates are completely road legal and will pass an MOT. To be road legal, the digits must follow the guidelines set out by the DVLA as well as be gloss black. This means digits such as Carbon and Crystal are NOT road legal.

What are Show Plates?
Show plates are plates with custom wording or spacing. If you select 'show plates' during the ordering process, we will produce your plates exactly how to write them. Please do be aware, we cannot see a double space as easily as you can when writing it so if you do require a double space, please email us once you've placed your order outlining that you require a double space. Show plates will not be sold with any legal markings on them as they are not road legal. Even if you select 'show plates' but still put legal spacing, they will still not come with the legal markings.
Are 'Show Plates' legal?
In short, no. Show plates are not legal to use on the UK roads. These plates are specifically sold for use at shows only and are not sold intended for road use. If you buy show plates and use them on the road, we will not be held responsible for any legal action taken against you.
What's in the box?
In your number plate box, you'll receive your selected number plates, a pack containing 4x screws, 2x yellow caps, 2x black caps & 2 white caps. Along with this, you'll also receive 10x adhesive pads however, we always recommend to use the screws for total piece of mind.
